The saddle bag you fit once and forget
A small saddle bag is the most useful bag on a bike, because it removes the decision. Tube, levers, multi-tool and a CO2 live in it permanently. You never pack for a ride, and you are never the person who left the spare at home.
Size it to what it needs to hold rather than to the biggest one available. A bulging bag swings on rough ground and rubs the back of your shorts.
Strap or clip
Strap-mounted bags fit any saddle and cost less. Clip-mounted bags come off in a second, which is useful if you move one bag between bikes or take it inside at a coffee stop.
Top tube and frame bags
A top tube bag sits behind the stem and is where the things you want mid-ride go — food, a phone, a jacket sleeve. Reaching into a jersey pocket while riding loaded gravel is not always sensible; reaching forward is.
A frame bag in the main triangle carries considerably more, and is the answer for long gravel days and light bikepacking. It keeps weight low and central, which barely affects how the bike handles.
What to actually put in it
For most rides: a spare tube, tyre levers, a multi-tool, a CO2 or mini pump, and a quick link for your chain's speed. Some cash and a phone.
If you run tubeless, still carry the tube. It is the get-home fix when sealant cannot close a cut.
Common questions
Will a saddle bag fit my saddle?
Almost all of them mount to the saddle rails and fit anything standard. Very short or unusually shaped racing saddles are occasionally tight — bring the bike to our shop in Hout Bay near the harbour and we will check it against the bag before you buy.
Does it rub the tyre?
It should not, but on a small frame with a low saddle the clearance is worth checking. Easy to test in the shop.
