Why a gravel bike makes sense here

The Cape has an unusual amount of very good riding on unsealed district roads, and most of it is reached by a stretch of tarmac. That is exactly the problem a gravel bike solves — drop bars and reasonable speed on the road, clearance for wide tyres and a stable enough position for the dirt.

Both Terras here run a 1x drivetrain: a single chainring at the front. Fewer things to go wrong, no dropped chains on rough ground, and a much simpler bike to ride when you are tired.

The M31eTeam is the higher-specified of the two; both share the same intent.

Tyres do most of the work

The single biggest change you can make to how a gravel bike rides is what you put on it. The same frame is a fast road bike on 35mm slicks and a genuinely capable dirt bike on 50mm treads. See gravel tyres.
