A computer, or your phone?
A phone tracks a ride perfectly well. What a dedicated computer gives you is a screen you can read in direct Cape sunlight, a battery that lasts far longer than a ride, a mount that will not let go on a rough descent, and a device you do not mind exposing to rain and dust.
It also leaves the phone in your pocket with its battery intact, which matters on a long ride out past Chapman's Peak where the signal is patchy and the phone is your way home if something breaks.
Heart rate, and what it is actually for
A heart rate monitor is the cheapest way to make training deliberate rather than accidental. Its real value is not the number during a hard effort — it is seeing, over weeks, that the same climb at the same effort is costing you fewer beats.
A chest strap remains considerably more accurate than an optical wrist reading, particularly during intervals where the number changes fast.
Mounts matter more than people expect
A computer mounted on the stem is readable if you look down. An out-front mount puts the screen in your natural field of view, so you are not taking your eyes off the road to read it — and it keeps the unit clear of the stem bolts.
A top cap mount is the neat option on a bike where the bars are crowded.
Match the mount to the computer's quarter-turn pattern before buying — they are not all the same.

Will it pair with my other kit?
Most modern computers speak both ANT+ and Bluetooth, which covers nearly every heart rate strap and sensor. Check the specific device.
Do I need one to enjoy riding?
No. Plenty of the best rides happen without a single number being recorded. Buy one if the data genuinely interests you, not because you feel you should.
