Collection: Shimano SPD Mountain Bike Pedals
Shimano's SPD mountain bike pedals — the M520 and M540, the ME700 trail pedal and the Deore XT M8100. Double-sided, rebuildable, and the closest thing cycling has to a permanent fitting.

The pedal that refuses to die
Shimano's SPD mechanism has been essentially unchanged for three decades, and that is the point. Cleats bought today fit pedals from the 1990s. Bearings are serviceable rather than sealed and disposable. It is one of the few bits of cycling equipment that got designed properly the first time and then left alone.
Which one to pick
M520 is the baseline — a simple double-sided pedal with a small cage. It is unglamorous, it weighs a bit, and it will outlast the bike.
M540 is the same idea with better bearings and a slightly wider body, which gives a more stable feel underfoot.
Deore XT M8100 is the racing version — the widest, stiffest platform in the range and the smoothest bearings.
ME700 is the trail pedal, with a cage around the mechanism to add support and some protection from rock strikes.
Mud clearance, and why the design looks so sparse
An SPD mountain pedal is mostly holes. That is deliberate: the open design lets mud and grit fall straight through instead of packing into the mechanism and stopping the cleat seating.
It works well in Cape dust and considerably better than it looks in winter mud. A rinse after a wet ride and the occasional drop of lube on the spring is all the maintenance they ask for.
Common questions
Will these work with road shoes?
Only if the shoe has two-bolt SPD drilling. Most road shoes are three-bolt for SPD-SL. Check the sole, or see the full pedals range.
How tight should the tension be?
Start at the loosest setting. You want to be able to twist out deliberately without thinking about it. Wind it up later if you find yourself pulling out under hard efforts. Ask Hout Bay Cycle Co to set them up if you would rather not guess.
